Making LKS business critical – a workshop by Anne Gray

Aims of the workshop

  • The workshop aims to upskill  LKS staff to provide evidence support for the (non –clinical) business needs  of their NHS trust/region.
  • To generate ideas for a collaborative resource to support  LKS knowledge services to  NHS managers/commissioners

**Feedback from the workshops**
What attendees said about the workshop:

  • "I had attended this workshop and it was Brilliant. I was able to and more confident to plan events, create ppt for and be part of the “executive team strategic planning forums”. If you can get a chance to attend the next one, I would recommend it. "
  • "I am more confident in offering and providing this service to the members of the Trust's board”
  • “I was able to do an evidence search for a manager in the Trust shortly after attending the course. I was able to expand the search beyond the usual HDAS which led me to find more pertinent results. I regularly use the additional sources in searches now”

Learning outcomes:

Attendees will compile an evidence briefing on their chosen topic for managers/commissioners of their NHS trust demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of business critical issues, key resources,  and using a presentation format appropriate to their audience.

Key aspects:

  1. Understanding the business world of commissioners/managers
  2. Who are the decision makers in the organisation and what are their organisational priorities.
  3. What are the key resources and how are they used
  4. Presentation of evidence for managers

Making LKS Business critical- Anne Gray's workshop presentation (October 2018)

Evidence summaries: adding value to literature searches - presentation given by a team from Public health England at EAHIL 2017 describing the work of their evidence summary service. The PHE team have a protocol outlining the steps taken to write an evidence summary and three of their reports have been included in the Examples page.

Many commissioners are not trained in critical appraisal. Michael Cook (Public Health Evidence & Knowledge Specialist, Bolton Council) has produced a great presentation "How to read a paper:  (when your critical appraisal training was *such* a long time ago)" which underlines the differences between classical approaches and those needed by commissioners and managers.  Please use with acknowledgement.
